How to Play Jaws

…We’re going to need a bigger table. In this week’s How to Play, host Becca Scott teaches Jaws by Ravensburger. Relive the classic film in a 1 vs all action adventure game that takes place in 2 phases. Become the Killer Shark of Amity, menace the swimmers and avoid capture, or be Hooper, Brody and Quint and hunt down the killer beast in the Amity Island Phase. Then, defend the Orca from an attack by the killer shark and defeat it once and for all or become chum in the Orca Phase.

Thanks to Ravensburger for partnering with us on this video. Learn more about the game here:

Tabletop games are super fun, but learning the complicated directions and rules can be a challenge. Becca Scott is your game tutor, explaining the game mechanics in an easy to follow way, so you can get to playing the games faster.

  • It is an amazing board game. Even more if you like the movie. Very well explained.
    Thanks!

  • We've played this half a dozen times, it seems the shark always gets 9 swimmers in act 1 (quickly and easily). Act 1 is fun but is over before it's begun. Act 2 is repetitive and long winded.. I wonder if we have missed something vital but apparently not!

  • "The shark cannot travel across land" Unless you are a SAND SHARK!….

Ok, I will get out from here…….

  • Great review – easy to follow run through – we watched it as we played our first game – it really helped.

  • This board game is fun, but it really should have come with an app to help guide all the phases along (and include the music and sound effects!). In this day and age companion apps should be standard, especially when you have a popular property like this.

  • 11:22 Slight correction / omission: (Manual page 10) "If a Boat Space gets damaged or destroyed, all Crew Members that were on that Boat Space fall into the water." The shark does not have to fully destroy the tile in order to knock crew members into the water; he needs only damage it.
Also, it would be helpful to clarify how the adjacent space rule works in the second act, as our group didn't understand it until having played the game several times, and from searching online it seems other people are equally confused. Each tile is divided into a boat space and a water space, with space borders being defined by a white line OR the edge of a tile. Any space that shares part of a line/edge with another space is considered adjacent. This is especially important as boat spaces become damaged or destroyed, because the adjancency of spaces (and therefore what can be targeted by the crew and shark) CHANGES as the round continues.
Also also, this is a really fun game that anyone with at least 1 friend willing to play should own.

Thank you so much for this video. I've tried to play this game with many groups of friends and while we love Act 1, the instructions for Act 2 simply do not explain anything regarding the dice rolls, evade points or the bonus attacks.

The first time I thought I was just misunderstanding the rules, but after having 3 groups of people read the manual and none of us understanding how to play, I think it's just not adequately explained. But with this video we can actually figure it out now 🙂

  • Really like the tempo you've set. It doesn't feel rushed but still get to see all the pieces in fast motion. A perfect way to explain a boardgame with no extraneous nonsense. Well done, keep it up!

  • Can jaws play multiple power moves in one turn? Every time we play it seems so overpowered when they can use multiple tokens at once

  • Got this the other day, a must have since Jaws is my all time favorite movie. While there's a little learning curve to figuring out how to play at times, especially in Act 2, it's a fun strategy game and a must have for Jaws collectors.

  • Nicely explained. Now i need the JAWS soundtrack for when i play. Also, Act I should be played with bright lights. Act II in darken lighting and whiskey shots.
