Jaws (NES) Playthrough – NintendoComplete

A playthrough of LJN’s 1987 NES game, Jaws.

Despite having virtually nothing to do with the movie on which it is based, Jaws is a respectable action game, combining shooter mechanics with light RPG trappings. Once you understand how the game works, it can be finished in no time flat, but it’s an entertaining diversion from heavier fare. It’s part Galaga and part Gradius, with a QTE event for the finale!

Jaws is SIGNIFICANTLY better than Friday the 13th, which LJN subjected the public to two years after unleashing this masterpiece. Well, fun and playable game. Probably because it was developed by Westone – the guys that handled early versions of Adventure Island/Wonder Boy. That makes much more sense.

  • I spent hours and hours and hours dying on this game.
I thought it was basically impossible to beat.
Then this guy does it in less than 19 minutes. 🤣

  • This game used to scare the SHIT out of me and now I look at it and
I'm completely embarrassed how this game scared me so badly I'd refuse
to play it and yet my son can play games like Silent Hill without even blinking.
Just goes to show that video games have in fact desensitized children.

  • It should be noted that this game isn't based on the original Jaws movie. It's based on Jaws: The Revenge, AKA, Jaws 4, AKA, one of the worst movies ever made.

  • Wow this takes me back. I had this game when I was a really young kid. I was really intrigued by it because I had no idea how to play it.

  • Great video as always!

Edit: Actually can I use some of this for credits on a few videos this weekend? I'll plug you as always! (I tried to get to the level I want to screen capture, but I'm not good enough to and keep dying, haha)

  • I live in a coastal town and I can confirm that shells are indeed valid currency. I paid 7 shells to get my car fixed and had enough change for pizza.

  • I like Jaws for the NES. I'll tell you why:

    1. It has enough variety in it's game-play to get by (that is, it has power-ups, UNLIKE SHARKS ON ACTION 52 FOR NES)! Jaws for the NES also has bonus stages AND the strobe parts AND the underwater sections. (Seriously, what were the makers of Action 52 for NES THINKING WHEN THEY DECIDED TO COPY THE UNDERWATER SECTIONS OF JAWS FOR THE NES)?

    2. It's short enough to be completed in under 20 minutes or less. (I'm looking at YOU, SHARKS – ACTION 52 (NES))! I can often beat Jaws in 10 minutes or less!

    3. Jaws for the NES doesn't artificially lengthen the game-play (that is, it doesn't MAKE the sharks and other enemies go at such a fast speed that it is almost impossible/impossible to hit them 99% of the time – this is one of the reasons why Sharks on Action 52 (NES) (and just about every other piece of junk on Action 52 for NES) FAILS)!

Here are some "tips" to help you beat Jaws for the NES:

    1. You need a MINIMUM requirement of Power Level 3 to take down Jaws. Yes, it will take some time to deplete Jaws's power bar to nothing, but IT IS possible to take down Jaws with Power Level 3 (of course, you CAN go higher if you want to).

    2. Every 30,000 points, there is a sub that appears somewhere on the map. Get it, because it increases your firepower by a certain amount.

    3. You can swim to the top of the water and not get hit/hurt by Jaws.

  • There is death just beneath the surface waiting. Great video!

  • If the bonus scenes were removed from the game it would be much much better, the plane bombing runs take too long, still I really like this game, plenty of nostalgia for me here.

  • The Jaws movie this was based on sucked, but the game was fun. I guess a shirty movie equals a great video game

  • This game was loosely based on Jaws 4 and I stress that term loosely. It was hard to kill Jaws in this game.

  • It's a shame they couldn't get the Jaws death roar in 8-bit sound but this vid just scratched a big nostalgia itch for me! Thanks for posting it!

  • I always thought, did the plane explode, or get sucked into another dimension?

Rob West July 23, 2020 12:48 am Reply
  • Lining up the shark in Jaws = Landing the plane in Top Gun. That's how I always saw it. Same kid of precision needed and high level of difficulty.

Rob West July 23, 2020 12:48 am Reply
  • Man, that mini sub gave you such amazing maneuverability. I remember thinking, once I got it, I was a made man.

Rob West July 23, 2020 12:48 am Reply
  • I smell shenanigans. I literally saw you touch a lot of sharks, stingrays, and jellyfish, and I do recall this game had a pretty discriminating hit detection, wanna explain that?

Rob West July 23, 2020 12:48 am Reply
  • Dude, you are NOT playing it safe with how often you head to the bottom of the ocean. Those jellyfish killed more kids playing this game than childhood diabetes (which most kids who great up in the 80's and spent all their time playing shitty LJN Nintendo games likely had). Blame the sugary 80's cereals too.

Rob West July 23, 2020 12:48 am Reply
  • Worst midi version of the Jaws theme ever (right at the beginning, which should serve as a warning). LJN should rot in hell.

Rob West July 23, 2020 12:48 am Reply
  • It might be distinctly lacking any Richard Dreyfuss, but hey it's a fun LJN game. You can only ask for so much!
